How many troops should I have?

This questions gets asked a lot so I decided to put a bit of my analytics to the task of calculating what should be the bare minimums for a reasonable defense.

Assumptions:

• You will replace phalanx with steam giants when they become available.
• You will replace ballista ships with mortar ships or paddle-wheel rams when they become available.
• You will keep your town wall at an equal or higher level than your town hall level after your town hall has reached level 5.
• Your trading port level shouldn't be higher than your town hall level divided by 4. Ever.

To make clear, this is the minimums. The maximums are about 3 times this number for defense.
If you need gold you can cut back on the ships, but keep your land unit levels at LEAST to what is mentioned here to make attacking you more expensive than what they get.
